Jake and Lainy haven’t seen each other since their one night stand 12 years ago, but are reunited at a sex addicts meeting. Neither can stop sleeping with other people, yet they are left to answer one of life’s toughest questions: “Can men and women be ‘just friends’?”

Writer and director Lesley Headland’s new movie Sleeping with Other People is opening in theaters this September. The movie starrs Alison Brie, most commonly known to play Annie in NBC’s Community, and Jason Sudeikis, of Saturday Night Live, We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses, and countless other movies (seriously, he’s in everything.)

This is the second time Headland is directing from her own script, the first being Bachelorette, the 2012 film adaptation of her own play. One of her earlier projects was her 2008 play Assistance. She was also the screenwriter of the 2014 remake of About Last Night starring Kevin Hart.

Sleeping With Other People made its worldwide premiere at Sundance Film Festival and has since been picked up by IFC Films for distribution. The film has received mixed reviews from sites such as Collider, Hitflix and The Guardian. In an interview with Indiewire, Headland described her movie as a “f—ing rom-com”, as she expressed how strongly she felt about the ending of her movie:

“The financiers in all their infinite wisdom said, ‘Are you sure you don’t want to rewrite it? Are you sure you don’t want to have an ambiguous, ‘meh’ feeling like the end of most indie films?’ Indie has become a genre now as opposed to a way to make a movie. It’s like if you don’t end a movie like how ‘The Graduate’ ended you’re a f—ing piece of s–t,”

It goes without saying that viewers can expect a happy ending from this movie!

Sleeping with Other People is opening in theaters this Sept. 11.
